Women’s Consolidation Project
The Woman’s Consolidation Project is a forum for which women can voice their ideas for how women can unite in order to overcome oppression. We are women of all races and socioeconomic background and many of us consider ourselves to be feminists. In the words of a friend, feminism is a personal and political movement to overcome oppression. We do not see this movement exclusive to men. In fact, both men and women must work hard to eliminate male dominance and control over women. Patriarchal ideology exaggerates biological differences and keeps men and women confined to certain roles. When women step outside of these roles, we are policed by both men and other women. Women will speak poorly of one another based on style of dress, behavior, or aptitude in a professional setting. This must stop, and we must consolidate as women in order to equalize gender roles and help overcome the patriarchal worldview that sees everything in terms of competition and places an irrational emphasis on economic, rather than spiritual, wealth.
As women, we have been taught “to either ignore our differences or see them as threats rather than forces of change.” This is a quote from Audre Lorde, a Carribean-American writer, poet, and activist. Her words and teachings have resonated within my mind and her philosophy resonates throughout the theme of this project.
